Excerpt from the Astronomical Society of Australia... "On 20 December 2007 the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy. The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) is a global effort initiated by
the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO to help the citizens of the world rediscover their place in the Universe through the daytime and nighttime sky, and thereby engage a personal sense of wonder and discovery.
IYA2009 is a global celebration of astronomy and its contributions to society and culture, marks this event. With the theme of The Universe, Yours to Discover, IYA will help reconnect people with the night sky, the common heritage of humanity."
IYA2009 activities will take place locally, regionally and nationally. For more information about IYA2009, see the Australian IYA site or the International IYA2009 site.
