13/02/09 - Take Back the Night - join the campaign

Good morning everyone - please find enclosed an important remember from our IYA Cornerstone Partner, Dark Skies Awareness. Lets all join in and do our part to tackle light pollution and preserve our night sky for generations to come.

TAKE BACK THE NIGHT!
JOIN THE GLOBE AT NIGHT CAMPAIGN, 16-28 MARCH
!

At least 2 out of 5 Americans, 1 out of 6 Europeans and 1 out of 10
people worldwide have never seen 90% of the stars in our night sky.
With half the world's population now living in cities, this problem is
only getting worse. Yet you can easily be part of a local solution to
a global problem.

Take back the night! Take a few minutes to monitor your local night
sky brightness, place your measurement on-line noting your location,
date and time and within a few weeks see a map of light pollution
levels worldwide.

Be part of the "GLOBE at Night" citizen-science campaign and make a
world of difference! The GLOBE at Night campaign runs March 16-28,
2009. Help preserve our natural heritage for generations to come. Find
out more information at www.globe.gov/globeatnight . GLOBE at Night is
an official International Year of Astronomy Dark Skies Awareness
cornerstone project.

To learn more about other IYA2009 Dark Skies Awareness cornerstone
projects and the effects of light pollution, visit

14/02/09 - Forum and blog

Be sure to take advantage of two new communications features on the 100 Hours of Astronomy web site.

A new blog will feature the latest news about programs, highlight innovative event ideas and more of interest. Bloggers from around the world will take part and comments can be added after each entry. We'd love to have your feedback.

The forum is available for questions and discussion of event ideas, methods, resources or anything else you might want to discuss. Each section has a moderator to answer questions and a Task Group member for anything new. It's a good way to get answers and assistance with your event planning and help others.

Blog: http://100hoursofastronomy.org/blogs

Forum: http://100hoursofastronomy.org/SMF (separate account registration)

More news will be coming soon!

15/02/09 - New map of events by country

A new world map showing the number of events registered in each country is now available on the 100 Hours of Astronomy web site. You'll find a link on the Find Events page or go directly to the new map at http://100hoursofastronomy.org/component/eventlist/countriesmap . You can zoom in to find the country you're interested in. The flag of each country shows the number of events registered, and clicking on a flag takes you to a list of all events registered in that country.

And don't forget that you can embed the map -- customized, such as zoomed in to your country or area -- on your own web site. You'll find instructions on the Find Events page.

You can also download a kml file for use with Google Earth.

27/02/09 - 100 Hours of Astronomy latest updates

New Resources
We have added a number of new resources over the last week, these can be found at http://www.100hoursofastronomy.org/all-content
Educational - These resources cater to students, teachers, instructors, informal and formal educators. We indicate whether the material is specific to a given country, age-range (from kindergarten to university) and who the material will be of most interest to. All material is in English unless stated otherwise. This list is by no means complete, and we welcome your suggestions for additional items-- please email Terry Bridges ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

Stickers - For those groups wanting to give something small to the members of the public who participated your 100 hours Starparty Event, we have put together three stickers - 'I Saw the Moon', 'I Saw the Sun' and 'I Saw Saturn.' These are downloadable, 30 labels per page and compatible with Avery 5160 labels.

Note: If you would like a sticker made for your event, but want different wording, please send a jpg image, black font on white background of the words, no bigger than 252 pixels x 45 to Jennie at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

If your country has its own web site for registering your 100 Hours of Astronomy events, please don't forget to register on the global web site at http://www.100hoursofastronomy.org/eventsmain as well. This is where many people will come first and there are several ways for them to find your event. Support your national effort by raising the number of events shown in your country, too, in the new by-country map at http://www.100hoursofastronomy.org/component/eventlist/countriesmap !

100 Hours Junior
We welcome the Universe Awareness (UNAWE) as a 100 Hours of Astronomy partner. This is a collaboration between 100 Hours of Astronomy and Universe Awareness (also an IYA global cornerstone project) to connect amateur and professional astronomers with young children around the world during (and perhaps after) 100 Hours of Astronomy. Visit their website and show your support - 100 Hours Junior
Don't forget to visit our Blog, Picture Gallery and Forum pages
These are good places to share new ideas, upload pictures from your events, get advice and find answers to your questions about organizing or attending 100 Hours of Astronomy events. http://100hoursofastronomy.org
